Restorative Justice for Black Youth and Families (RJBYF) in Canada/Alberta

Program Overview:

The RJBYF program at Audacity for Peace and Social Justice Centre is a culturally grounded, community-led initiative designed to support Black youth, families, victims, and survivors impacted by the criminal justice system. This program advances equitable, trauma-informed, and restorative approaches to justice.

Recognizing the systemic overrepresentation of Black youth in the justice system, the program shifts the focus from punishment to healing, accountability, and reintegration. It provides wraparound, culturally responsive supports that address the root causes of justice involvement, including systemic racism, intergenerational trauma, and socio-economic inequities.

This initiative is community-driven and co-designed with Black youth, families, elders, and community leaders to ensure services are relevant, effective, and empowering.

Program Model:
The program integrates restorative justice practices with navigation supports, mental health services, and community reintegration pathways. It draws on proven approaches such as healing circles, mentorship, and culturally anchored case management—while also incorporating emerging models supported through national investments in youth justice, justice innovation, and victim services.
